Statement about The murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi

With pain and shock, journalists in the whole world have followed details and consequences of the dangerous crime that led the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be killed at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul.

No doubt that such a crime is condemned, but the circumstances surrounding the murder of Khashoggi have raised fears of continuous risks journalists face everywhere. This case makes us wonder if there is no safe place left for journalists anymore to express their opinions without persecution or being subjected to violations. Perpetrators confiscate freedom of expression and silence those who dare to only express their opinions.

Syrian journalists might have worried the most as they have witnessed and known how hundreds of their colleagues in Syria had lost their lives for documenting truth for the world. Worries led many of these journalists to seek safety in other safe countries. However, fears now rise again as some of journalists are forced to visit the Syrian regime’s embassies and consulates in the world for getting needed documents.

Hence, Syrian Journalists Association (SJA), on the one hand, expresses deepest condolences to the international press family and also Khashoggi’s family and, on the other hand, stresses on the importance of ensuring safety of journalists everywhere. SJA asks the international community to activate international laws in regards of protecting media professionals and hold all perpetrators accountable ensuring no impunity to the perpetrators.

Syrian Journalists Association (SJA), on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, asks concerned authorities in Turkey and Saudi Arabia to completely reveal details of the heinous crime and bring all those involved to justice.
