Statement on the detention of the journalist ”Abdelhafiz Al Houlani” by the Lebanese authorities

By now, nine days have passed since the detention of our colleague ”Abdelhafiz Al Houlani”  by the Lebanese Intelligence for reasons related to the performance of his media mission, without being brought to any judicial body.

Al Houlani has revealed by documented audio and video the existence of abnormal abortions among Syrian refugees in the camps of Arsal in the northern Lebanon, which is at the core of the profession of journalism.

While it would have been better to pursue the case of abortion and expose its circumstances to public opinion, the Lebanese authorities have resorted to the detention of the journalist in a way that intimidates and terrifies the other journalists.

The Syrian Journalists Association condemns the continued detention of Al Houlani, and holds the Lebanese government authorities fully responsible for his safety. And calls all relevant international organizations and for pressure to release him immediately and unconditionally.

While the information indicates the possibility of fabricating false charges against Al Houlani, who has already been detained for reasons related to his journalistic activity, the association is alerting to increased fears that he may be imprisoned or physically abused.
