Special Report: 55 media professionals were killed in Eastern Ghouta in 7 years
As this week marks the seventh anniversary of the Syrian revolution, the Syrian Center for Journalistic Freedoms of Syrian Journalists Association (SJA) has published on Sunday March 18, 2018 a special report entitled “Media professionals in besieged Eastern Ghouta are under bombardment after 7 years of the Syrian revolution”.
The report documents total violations against media professionals committed in besieged Eastern Ghouta of Damascus Countryside in 7 years.
According to the report, 163 documented violations were committed in different areas of Damascus Countryside governorate. 117 out of the 163 violations were committed in Eastern Ghouta.
It is worth mentioning that the Center has documented totally 1103 violations since the start of Syrian Revolution mid-March 2011 till the end of Feb. 2018.
The report shows that 55 media professionals were killed in Eastern Ghouta by the regime while opposition’s factions are responsible for killing 2 media professionals.
ISIS and Russia killed one each while 3 media professionals were killed by unidentified sides.
The report points out that 426 cases of killed media professionals in Syria have been documented since mid-March till end of Feb. 2018.
The report also documents 28 cases of injuring and hitting media professionals in Eastern Ghouta since 2011.
Also 10 cases of detaining, arrest and abducting media professionals were committed by different conflicting sides on the Syrian arena.
The Center documented 14 violations against media organizations in Ghouta. The regime committed 10 out of the 14 violations while opposition committed 4 violations.
The Center also documented 10 violations of threatening, confiscating properties and issuing arrest warrants on absentia. Opposition committed 7 out of the 10 violations while the regime committed 3 violations.
The regime’s forces topped those responsible for violations in Eastern Ghouta by committing 84 violations while opposition committed 24 violations.
Russia committed 4 violations while ISIS and Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly al-Nusra Front) committed one violation each.
It is worth noting that 3 violations were committed by unidentified sides.
The report includes testimonies from a number of media activists in besieged Eastern Ghouta. They talked about the military campaign launched by the regime on the area where thousands of civilians were killed and injured. They also have talked about the difficulties they face while performing their media work covering what is going on inside Ghouta.
