Killing of 9 media professionals in the first half of 2018
The Syrian Center for Journalistic Freedoms of Syrian Journalists Association published on Friday July 20, 2018 a special report shows outcome of violations committed against media in Syria in the first half of 2018.
The infographic report documented 51 violations against media in Syria from the beginning of January till the end of June 2018. The figure of violations significantly decreased comparing to that in the first half of the previous year as 132 violations were documented in the first half of 2017.
March witnessed the higher number of violations as 14 cases were documented while February witnessed 11 violations and January 10 violations. May witnessed 7 violations and April 6 violations. The lowest number was recorded in June as 3 violations were documented.
According to the report, violations varied in the first half of the year 2018 as the Center documented 9 cases of killing, 24 cases of hitting and injury, 14 cases of abduction and detaining, and one case against media organizations. Also, 3 other violations were documented.
The report shows that February and March witnessed the higher number of killing against media professionals as 8 cases were recorded each month while one killing case was documented in May. The report also shows that Russian forces top those responsible for such violations by killing 4 media professionals while Syrian regime is responsible for 3 cases and PYD for one case. Also, One case is committed by unknown parties.
The Russian forces also top those responsible for violations by committing 15 cases then opposition groups by 10 violations, Syrian regime committed 9 violations and external parties 6 violations while Hayaat Tahrir al-Sham HTS and PYD committed 3 violations each. It is worth noting that 5 violations were committed by unknown parties.
As for geographical distribution, Aleppo province witnessed the highest number of violations as 16 cases occurred in Aleppo, then Idlib and Damascus Countryside witnessed 14 cases each while Daraa 4 cases and one case in each of Hama and Homs. It is worth mentioning that one case was documented in Lebanon.
The report includes a list of media professionals’ names who were killed in the first half of 2017. The list shows the date, place and the responsible party of killing.
